The Colombian adoption program is well-established and stable, with an organized and solidly funded child welfare system through their central adoption authority (ICBF). The Colombian program is very flexible in regard to criteria for prospective adoptive parents and is less restrictive than many.  Not to mention there is a wonderful hosting program offered by ICBF which, combined with the adoption program, offers potential parents and children a wonderful way to get to know each other prior to adopting.  A Love Beyond Borders launched our program over 12 years ago, helping many children and families find each other through hosting and adoption. 

Although we have closed ALBB's Colombia program as part of our voluntary decision to not renew our Hague authorization for 2024, our Colombia program director, responsible for our clients in this program, is now working closely with a partner agency's clients to provide guidance and support for their Colombian adoption. Drawing upon her 12 years of experience in Colombia, including hosting and adopting twice from Colombia, she remains steadfast in ensuring that people who choose to adopt in Colombia will benefit from her insight, experience, and passion which are now delivered through her work at one of our partner agencies.

ABOUT COLOMBIA ADOPTIONS:

While Colombia is no longer the go-to place to adopt a healthy young child as it was many years ago (for lots of good reasons), there are many children who need homes. For those who hope to adopt a young healthier child in Colombia, it is important to note that only Colombians living in Colombia or outside of Colombia may adopt those children.  This is no longer a country where non-Colombians can expect to adopt a young healthy child. Rather, the children most in need who are available for adoption are ages 6-15 years old and have mild or moderate, correctable or kids of all ages with permanent bigger special needs. It’s a great place to adopt siblings as well, and applicants seeking to adopt three or more children may have very short waits. In recent years, the Colombian adoption authority has actively moved towards advocating for their older waiting children (10 -15 years old), larger sibling groups, and children of all ages with permanent medical and developmental needs.  

Colombia is a country with a beautifully diverse culture, quickly and easily accessible to the US, and a well-built, well-funded and long-standing ethical child welfare and adoption system. The central authority in place to oversee adoption is called the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF), also known in English as the Colombian Family Welfare Institute.
